Lantern Breaker is our take on the classic brick-breaking game, moved into the wood. At the bottom of the stage you steer a wooden paddle shaped like a leaf. Bouncing above it is the ball, a glowing firefly that leaves a light trail behind it as it races about. The whole stage glows in the glade’s evening colours, and every brick you break feels like a small flicker of light.

Each of the twelve levels is a handcrafted wall of rounded bricks in the glade’s colours. Some bricks are lanterns: they need two hits, and they light up when you strike them the first time. Clear every brick to finish the level, and your stars depend on how many of your three lives remain. Lose the firefly off the bottom and a frog life goes with it, so careful steering pays off in stars.

How to play Lantern Breaker

  1. Press Play and launch the firefly from your leaf paddle towards the wall of bricks above.
  2. Move the paddle with the mouse, your finger or the arrow keys to keep the firefly in play.
  3. Hit the firefly with different parts of the leaf to change its angle and aim at gaps.
  4. Catch power-ups that drop from broken bricks: Wide leaf, Twin fireflies or Slow glow.
  5. Break every brick, including the two-hit lanterns, to clear the level and unlock the next one.

Getting better at Lantern Breaker

  • Catch the firefly near the tip of the leaf to send it out wide; near the middle sends it straighter up.
  • Aim for a gap at the side of the wall; a firefly bouncing behind the bricks clears them for you.
  • Hit lantern bricks early, because the second hit is easier while the area around them is still full.
  • Twin fireflies is the best moment to stay calm; follow the lower one and let the other look after itself.
  • Save a little attention for falling power-ups, but never lunge for one if it means missing the firefly.

Where the firefly lands on the leaf decides everything

The heart of Lantern Breaker is that the firefly’s new angle depends on where it touches the paddle. A hit in the centre sends it up fairly straight, while a hit towards either end sends it off at a sharp slant. That makes the paddle a steering tool, not just a wall.

Once this clicks, the game changes. Instead of simply returning the ball, you start picking targets: the last brick in a corner, the lantern half-lit in the middle, a gap that lets the firefly ricochet across the top. Good runs feel more like snooker than panic. You will catch yourself leaning towards the screen, lining up a shot as if you could nudge the firefly by willpower.

Wide leaf, Twin fireflies and Slow glow

Power-ups drop occasionally from broken bricks and drift down towards your paddle. Catch Wide leaf and your paddle stretches, giving you a more forgiving surface. Twin fireflies adds a second ball, which can clear a wall in moments if you keep your head.

Slow glow calms the firefly down, perfect for a tricky last brick or a moment when the pace has run away from you. Since they arrive from bricks you break, aiming at busy parts of the wall tends to bring more of them your way. Catching two in quick succession, say Wide leaf just as Twin fireflies arrives, makes for some of the most cheerful moments in the game.

Questions about Lantern Breaker

Three, shown as small frog icons. Losing the firefly off the bottom of the stage costs one, and your stars at the end of a level depend on how many are left.

Yes. Progress through the twelve levels is saved in your browser, so you can return later and carry on from the furthest wall you reached.

Those are lantern bricks. They take two hits, glowing after the first one, before they finally break.
